An Introduction to NASA

Before, this government agency in charge of the the United State’s civilian space program was known as NACA or the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. On July 29, 1958 the National Aeronautics and Space Act was enacted and this paved the way for the establishment of NASA or the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. But the goal of studying space is still intact. Aside from its civilian goal, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration is also the government agency responsible for military research in space.

Some of NASA’s successful missions to space include the famous Space Shuttle, the space station called Skylab, and the Apollo missions to the moon, where the first human landing on the moon was recorded and televised around the world. One of NASA’s space explorations goal is to prove or disprove outer space theories such as the Big Bang Theory. And NASA shares its observation information with other environment organizations like the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite.

At the onset of the Cold War (military standoff between the Soviet Union and the United States), the United States felt it was being left behind by the Union Soviet Socialist Republic in the space exploration front. The Soviet space program was way ahead of that of the United States’ especially when the former set into space the world’s first man-made satellite, the Sputnik 1,on the 4th of October, 1957. Because of this perceived threat and possible Soviet supremacy in space which will the United States at a disadvantage, Dwight D. Eisenhower and other members of pertinent government agencies created the Advanced Research Projects Agency or ARPA to be not only at pace but ahead of the then more advanced Soviet space system.

In only less than three months after the successful Sputnik 1 Soviet space launch, the United States answered back with its own space module launch, the Explorer 1 January 31, 1958 launch. Afterward, memorandums and recommendations to beef up and hasten United States space exploration program poured into President Eisenhower’s desk. In the same year, President Eisenhower, in a speech to the US Congress, broached on the formation of a civilian-led space research agency which is what led the way for the founding of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

Some of NASA’s space programs include:

The Skylab, the very first US space station for space research. It was visited by astronauts thrice. The goal was to push the Skylab into a safer space level but unfortunately it fell back to earth I 1979 before that could happen.

The Apollo missions, was the first great feat achieved by NASA when it was able to land the first humans o the moon in 1969. Buzz Aldrin, Michael Collins, and Neil Armstrong were the first men who set foot on the moon. After that, there were still five successful moon landing missions.
